After a month of online squabbling on social media, a third effort led to compromise legislation that the House and Senate both approved and the governor quickly signed.

Measures include the creation of an immigration enforcement board and stiffer penalties for undocumented people who commit crimes.

The measures were the result of a deal between Gov. Ron DeSantis and his fellow Republican legislative leaders, House Speaker Danny Perez of Miami and Senate President Ben Albritton of Wauchula. DeSantis had vowed to veto the immigration bill the Legislature passed last month after they rejected his preferred immigration plan.
