Chicago school leaders say immigration agents showed up to an elementary school today in what may be the first of such actions since the Trump administration this week reversed federal policy to now permit immigration enforcement inside schools,

According to the school's principal, Natasha Ortega, agents were not allowed entry or permitted to speak with students or staff.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents attempted entry into a Chicago elementary school Friday morning, but were not allowed inside or permitted to speak to anyone inside, Chicago Public Schools officials said.

The incident comes amid a threatened Trump administration crackdown and sent ripples of fear through the K-8 school.

After Chicago Public Schools (CPS) initially claimed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents visited a South Side elementary school Friday morning, it was later confirmed that this was not the case.

School officials said ICE agents tried to enter Hamline Elementary Friday morning, spurring panic. The Secret Service later claimed responsibility.
