Environmental groups on Wednesday moved in court to block President Donald Trump’s administration from allowing offshore oil drilling along broad swaths of U.S. coastline, in what appeared to be the first legal challenges to the Republicans’ efforts to boost fossil fuel production.

Several conservation groups filed litigation in federal court in Alaska this week seeking to stop efforts by the Trump administration to expand offshore oil and gas drilling, including in the U.S. Arctic Ocean off the state's coasts.

The suit, filed in Alaska, is likely to be the first of many challenging the administration’s goal of expanding fossil fuel production.
