Without its own government, Korea was temporarily divided along the 38th parallel - by 2 US soldiers looking at a National Geographic map. The northern half was allied to the Soviet Union.

In June 1950, with the support of China and the Soviet Union, North Korea launched an attack on South Korea across the 38th parallel.
