Feb 21, 2016 · I have several blues on my palette, but mainly use Ultramarine Blue, Prussian Blue and Winsor Blue. Ultramarine as a general purpose blue which also with browns makes a wide range of greys and black. Winsor blue for skies as it produces very smooth washes, and Prussian blue mixed with burnt sienna to make conifer greens.

Jan 16, 2018 · Using oils, a few months ago, I replaced Ultramarine Blue (UB) with Indanthrone Blue (IB), and I love it. At least in Gamblin brand, the hues are about the same (leans slightly purple). The IB is moderately transparent (not as much as UB), and of course there is a huge difference in chroma and masstone darkness.

Option 2: If you want a split-primary palette, then have Ultramarine as a warm blue, and Phthalo Blue as a cool blue. Use the mix of Ultramarine and Phthalo for sky. Use Phthalo blue to mix with yellow for green. In either case, you don’t need Cobalt.

Nov 25, 2016 · To my eye, cobalt blue is very much greener than ultramarine. Maybe a deep shade of cobalt would do it, but I haven’t seen it. Indanthrone is too dull to be a real substitute for ultramarine. The only true replacement is PB74 cobalt blue deep, but it’s a bit duller and greener too, plus it granulates and it’s crazy expensive.

Mar 9, 2013 · If you’re going to get one, I’d recommend a middle ultramarine, unless you specifically want it to be for a limited palette that includes a greenish/cyan blue and a reddish blue. In that case the deep or french ultramarines are good, but then again I have Old Holland’s regular ultramarine and it’s plenty reddish enough for that.

Different brand-names offer different strengths, degree of grinding, and consequently, differences in tinting power. Armenian blue and lazuline blue are old names for genuine lapis ultramarine. Personally, I prefer Da Vinci’s ultramarine blue.
